Rick Jeanneret Diagnosed With Throat Cancer, But Plans To Return To Sabres Booth

Sabres broadcaster Rick Jeanneret "has been diagnosed with throat cancer," according to a front-page piece by Alan Pergament of the BUFFALO NEWS. Jeanneret, who has been calling Sabres games on radio and TV for 43 years, said that a "golf ball-sized growth in his throat was malignant." He expects to "have radiation treatment for six or seven weeks and possibly chemotherapy." Doctors said that there is "an 85 percent chance of recovery." Jeanneret: "I would like to stress I have every intention of coming back. I have probably three months ahead of me that aren't going to be fun. I know they aren't going to be." He added his return to play-by-play is "open-ended." Jeanneret hopes to call the 47 games "he is scheduled to do under terms of the three-year contract he signed last season" (BUFFALO NEWS, 7/2).
