Sources: San Diego Not Expected To Make USOC's Final Cut For '24 Summer Games

The USOC is "scheduled to trim its list of potential host candidates" for the '24 Summer Games to two or three at its BOD meeting next Tuesday, and San Diego "is not expected to be on it," according to sources cited in a front-page piece by Mark Zeigler of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. L.A. and Boston are expected to remain candidates, and S.F. or DC could "possibly" stay on the list. Philadelphia and N.Y. "accepted their fate and withdrew last week, and Dallas might not be far behind." A San Diego bid would "require the construction of two major stadiums (one downtown and another on the current site in Mission Valley), an athlete’s village, a new indoor sports arena and an aquatics center." But an "even bigger obstacle" might be "none of the above." San Diego '24 Exploratory Committee Chair Vincent Mudd said, “When I look at the six cities that are left, they all have superior airports to us. And that’s a problem. It’s one thing to build stadiums. But a bigger or a new airport, that’s a scary thing. Is the U.S. Olympic Committee going to let you have one of those red flags in your bid?” (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/5).
