Boston Univ. AD Mike Lynch yesterday announced his resignation "after a 10-year run marked by numerous achievements and a series of episodes that raised questions about his leadership," according to Bob Hohler of the BOSTON GLOBE. Lynch will step down June 30, "two months after BU’s women’s basketball coach Kelly Greenberg resigned amid bullying allegations." Her departure "came six years after Lynch fielded similar complaints about Greenberg but elected to keep her on the job." Lynch also "presided during a 2012 scandal involving the BU men’s hockey team." However, he is considered "a gifted fund-raiser." Lynch's "achievements at BU include helping to build New Balance Field and an underground garage through a fund-raising effort that generated" a $3M gift from Massachusetts-based New Balance. Lynch will be "succeeded on an interim basis by his deputy, Drew Marrochello" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/3). ESPN BOSTON's Jack McCluskey noted while several BU athletic teams "enjoyed a great deal of success in America East under Lynch and in their first season in the Patriot League, hockey is the undisputed No. 1" sport at the school. How that program fares in the coming years "will likely go a long way to establishing how Lynch is remembered" (ESPNBOSTON.com, 6/2).
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: George Mason Univ. yesterday named Jacksonville Univ. AD Brad Edwards to the same position. Edwards "will replace Tom O'Connor, who is retiring July 1" (AP, 6/2). In Jacksonville, Gene Frenette cites sources as saying that Edwards' "propensity to go job-hunting caused some friction with the administration." Sources added that the "timing of him landing the same position with George Mason worked out favorably for both parties, avoiding a continued awkward working relationship" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 6/3).
