Lawyers For Lakers Announcer Gonzalez Detail Discrimination Claims Against Team

Gonzalez makes $120,000, while his
caucasian counterparts collect $300,000
A lawyer for Lakers Spanish-language radio play-by-play announcer Fernando Gonzalez, who has filed a complaint against the team and partner Time Warner Cable, said her client "suffered pretty brutal, racial segregation," according to Eric Pincus of the L.A. TIMES. Gonzalez in his complaint is claiming he has been treated "differently from and less favorably than his Anglo-American counterparts in terms of wages, hours and conditions of employment." Gonzalez' attorney Lisa Maki said, "The more he complained, the more he was retaliated against." Pincus noted Gonzalez is "paid a lower salary than the Lakers' English-language team of John Ireland and Mychal Thompson." Gonzalez' attorney Genie Harrison said, "They pay him a different rate. The Caucasian announcers are making like $300,000 .... whereas he's making $120,000." The Lakers in a statement said, "We do not believe these allegations have any merit, and would like to point out that the majority of our broadcasters are people of color." Gonzalez is "under contract with the team" through the '14-15 season. Maki: "It's not like he wants to win the lottery. He just wants what he was entitled to" (LATIMES.com, 5/31).
