Orlando City SC, Disney Want Supporter Groups To Tone Down Profane Chants

With Orlando City SC temporarily calling ESPN's Wide World of Sports complex at Disney World home, Disney and team officials "are warning fans to tone down the language" at games, according to Paul Tenorio of the ORLANDO SENTINEL. The team is playing at the complex while Citrus Bowl renovations and construction of their stadium are completed. The clash "highlights a delicate equilibrium between soccer supporters' groups and their clubs." Orlando City SC Owner & President Phil Rawlins: "They can absolutely maintain that vociferous support (without cursing), they've shown it over the past couple games and they've shown it in the past." The club's "largest supporter groups" are the Iron Lion Firm and Ruckus. One chant "prominently features the F-word," while another "includes a word that might substitute for excrement." One "major issue that some, including Disney, have with the culture is the presence of young fans in the stadium listening to the colorful chants." Orlando City "sent out an advisory to fans stating that Disney had received 'an increasing number of complaints from … fans sitting outside the supporters section.'" The advisory also said "any fans engaged in excessive use of foul language will be subject to ejection." The past few home games "have featured far fewer objectionable chants, but the leaders of the Iron Lion Firm say there has been a lack of communication with Disney and inconsistent messages about what is acceptable." Recently, the group "posted a blog encouraging members to boycott beer and concessions at the venue." Iron Lion Firm co-President Jared Ambrose said that the group "is more than willing to find a happy medium with the organization." Ambrose: "We made it very clear to the supporters that if it does continue, we expect them to police themselves. If they don't police themselves, we will" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 6/1).
