Facility Notes

In Chicago, Hal Dardick notes Mayor Rahm Emanuel yesterday "sought to slow the sense of urgency the Cubs tried to create with the team’s latest unveiling" of new Wrigley Field plans. While Cubs officials had "indicated the latest plan would be considered at a June 5 hearing of the city Commission on Landmarks," Emanuel said that it "won’t happen." A source said that the Cubs "failed to share some details about the latest expansion plan with the mayor and senior City Hall officials, including relocating the ballpark’s bullpens to underneath the bleachers." That could "lead to changes in the ivied walls protected by the city’s landmark ordinance" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 5/29).

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE RAIN? In Pittsburgh, Henney & Smeltz report storms on Tuesday "might have exacerbated a nagging issue with insulation in the roof of Consol Energy Center and forced 20 to 30 music fans to relocate during a concert because of a water leak." Arena GM Tim Hassett said that the roof "has had small leaks at times, causing a 'slow drip in a couple spots.'" He said that though the installer and manufacturer have "tried to address the problem ... leaks were more extensive during Tuesday night's storms." Hassett said that workers will visit the arena today to "assess the problem" (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 5/29).

WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS: In Detroit, Mike Brudenell reports heavy rains this week "caused a water main to burst" under the Raceway on Belle Isle track, which is "scheduled to go green" tomorrow for practice and qualifying for this week's Verizon IndyCar Series Chevrolet Indy Dual in Detroit. Workers "toiled through the night" Tuesday and into yesterday to "fix the problem" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 5/29).
