Proposed UNLV Stadium To Generate $23M Per Year, Construction Costs Increased

UNLV’s proposed on-campus stadium could generate $7-12.1M in "net operating income during its first year, depending on whether it’s open-air or domed,” according to sources cited by Paul Takahashi of the LAS VEGAS SUN. Conventions, Sports & Leisure Int'l officials on Thursday “presented the UNLV Campus Improvement Authority Board several revenue estimates for a 50,000-seat football stadium that would be located on 60 acres northeast of Swenson Street and Harmon Avenue.” A domed UNLV stadium would generate $23.1M "in revenue, while operating expenses" would be $11M "during its first year of operation.” A covered stadium is “estimated to cost” between $663.9-713.9M and “could host 127 athletic and catered events a year.” UNLV’s “net operating income from its three existing athletic facilities” -- Cox Pavilion, Sam Boyd Stadium and Thomas and Mack Center -- is $3.2M annually (LAS VEGAS SUN, 5/23).

RAISE THE ROOF: In Las Vegas, Alan Snel notes CSL’s draft report “tweaked the proposed costs” for the university’s retractable roof stadium, “ratcheting it up” to $714M from a previous projected cost of $682M. CSL President Bill Rhoda said, “It’s going to be more complex than we originally thought.” Snel notes CSL is being “paid a $325,000 consulting fee.” Rhoda also “updated the number of annual events that would be staged at the proposed UNLV stadium, tweaking the number to 44 events per year for an enclosed stadium and 34 events for an open-air venue.” Those respective numbers of events “includes 17 annual” MLS regular-season games (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 5/23).
