Tired Of Being Kicked Around: Francesa Upset With Soccer Pre-empting FS1 Broadcasts

Since moving to FS1 from the YES Network about six weeks ago, Mike Francesa's afternoon talk show simulcast has been pre-empted for UEFA Champions League coverage several times, and he voiced his displeasure on-air Thursday. Francesa said to a caller of FS1, "They have dropped the ball when it comes to handling what they promised. We're working on it with the scheduling. I had a meeting with them today. I don't have an answer for you yet, but I promise you I'm working on it. I apologize. They have not done what they promised to do scheduling-wise. ... All I can say is for the folks who watch it every day, I do apologize. They have not done their job in that regard with the schedule. They have been very haphazard with the schedule and we are working on it, I promise" ("Francesa," FS1, 5/1).

HOW YOU LIKE THAT, DAWG? SPORTS ON EARTH's Joe DeLessio profiles FrancesaCon, a "day-long celebration of all things Francesa," and writes the fact that more than 500 people gathered at a N.Y. bar the day before Super Bowl XLVIII to celebrate the radio host would "only surprise those unfamiliar with his obsessive, sometimes bizarre (but always creative) online following." DeLessio notes he noticed how fans at FrancesaCon "talked about watching his show, as opposed to listening." DeLessio: "It's the paradox of Francesa: He's an old school host working in an old-school medium, but his show is nevertheless a hit with plugged-in millenials" (SPORTSONEARTH.com, 5/2).
