Fox' Jay Glazer Details Recent Life-Threatening Illness Kept Him From NFL Reporting

Fox Sports' Jay Glazer appeared on "The Dan Patrick Show" yesterday and detailed a recent bout with aspiration double pneumonia, a condition that left him hospitalized for several days and something he called the "craziest thing that ever happened to me." Glazer said on the day NFL free agency began, he went to a doctor's office for a back procedure that he gets "done all the time." He anticipated being done early in the morning, leaving him time to prepare for the start of free agency later that afternoon, but he had a bad reaction while being prepped for the operation. Glazer said, "Next thing I know, I'm being woken up by doctors who say, 'Hey, listen, we have to rush you to the hospital right now. You've had some issues.'" Glazer said he spent about four days in the hospital, and for the next several weeks, he "couldn't walk about two blocks without having to sit down" because of damage done to his lungs. Glazer said, "These guys at Fox have been unbelievable. They're like, 'Take your time. This is not something you can come back too fast from.'" He noted he has had "three setbacks" during the recovery, and his lungs are "damaged just to the point it's going to take awhile to come back" ("The Dan Patrick Show," Fox Sports Radio, 4/16). PRO FOOTBALL TALK's Mike Florio noted Glazer "didn't realize the gravity of the situation at the time," but his doctors soon "explained that the outcome could have been much worse." Glazer: "It could go one of two ways, and for a while I was going the wrong way." Glazer planned to attend the NFL owners meetings in Orlando last month, but the flight "would have required the use of an oxygen tank." Doctors worried Glazer's oxygen levels "could plummet at altitude, and that he could have a heart attack." He plans to "attempt to work this weekend for Fox, returning to action for UFC coverage," and he hopes "to return to his NFL duties soon" (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 4/16).
