SEC To Review Alcohol Sales Policy For Off-Campus Football Games

The SEC "plans to review its alcohol policy for neutral-site games and home games off campus, and not necessarily selling alcohol to the public at campus games," according to Jon Solomon of the BIRMINGHAM NEWS. The sale of alcohol at SEC football stadiums "is permitted in private suites but not public areas." LSU AD Joe Alleva said selling beer at football games "would enhance the fan experience. I don't think that's something that would necessarily be a negative for drunkenness and it might curtail the drunkenness if you sold beer." He added, "Perhaps if they had access in the stadium, they wouldn't drink as much when they come in. I think it's something we have to talk about." SEC Commissioner Mike Slive: "Up to now, we like our rule. I haven't heard any concerted interest in changing our rule, but our people would like to talk about it. ... I think this is an area where we want to walk slowly and carefully." Solomon notes the alcohol policy "will be on the SEC's agenda this spring." SEC Associate Commissioner Herb Vincent said that the "intent of the SEC's discussion is to clean up language as it relates to neutral-site games and home games off campus" (BIRMINGHAM NEWS, 3/6).
