NBA's Adam Silver Says League Will Examine Idea Of Eliminating Divisions

There are just three teams in the Eastern Conference over .500 entering play today -- none in the Atlantic Division -- and NBA Deputy Commissioner & COO Adam Silver yesterday indicated that eliminating divisions could be looked at in the future. Appearing on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Silver said, “Every day we should wake up and take a fresh look at everything we do, and I think divisions fall into that category. Obviously, they are historically based on geography in terms of weighted schedule and convenience of travel. The goal was to enhance rivalries and I'm not sure if that's still what's happening.” He added the Competition Committee likely will be “taking a fresh look” at eliminating divisions when it next meets (“Long Range,” SiriusXM NBA Radio, 12/9). NBA TV's Dennis Scott said, "I like the fact that we're always talking about trying to improve our game and maybe we should just have an East/West and keep it simple." NBA TV's Brent Barry said he was "certainly all for what Adam is talking about with regards to what it is the fans want to see come playoff time and that is the best basketball teams having an opportunity in the postseason." Barry noted the NBA Finals format "has already been shifted" from 2-3-2 back to the 2-2-1-1-1 format, and "this one may be another” way to improve the game ("NBA Gametime," NBA TV, 12/9).
