NFL Week 10 Overnights: CBS' Broncos-Chargers Leads; Incognito Boosts Fox' Pregame

CBS lead all NFL broadcast windows yesterday with a 14.8 overnight rating for its national window, which featured Broncos-Chargers in 91% of markets. That figure is down 9% from a 16.2 overnight for Fox’ national window in Week 10 last year, which featured Cowboys-Eagles. CBS did see a gain for its regional window, up 17% from Fox last year. Fox earned a 12.3 overnight for yesterday’s singleheader, up 17% from CBS last year. The net carried the first interview with suspended Dolphins G Richie Incognito during its “Fox NFL Sunday” pregame show. That program delivered a 3.6 overnight, which is the best for the show since a 3.8 rating in Week 5. NBC earned a 13.0 overnight for the Cowboys-Saints “SNF” telecast last night, down 5% from a 13.7 for Texans-Bears in Week 10 last year. Despite the drop, “SNF” was the top-rated program in primetime. The game delivered a 56.2 local rating in New Orleans and a 30.3 rating in Dallas-Ft. Worth (Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor).

NAILED IT
: In Baltimore, David Zurawik wrote CBS' Bengals-Ravens telecast yesterday was "worthy of prime time," with the first half "as good a half of NFL TV coverage as I have seen all year." Play-by-play announcer Greg Gumbel, whose "lethargy in some games has driven me to the brink of madness, seemed to be on the edge of his chair and coming out of his seat toward the camera as he set the pre-game stage." Director Suzanne Smith is "my MVP for the day," as she "had her cameras right down on the sideline from the opening moments of the game." Typical of her "deft touch, viewers were taken in replay" right from Ravens coach John Harbaugh’s face to a tight shot of K Justin Tucker's "victory dance" after his game-winning field goal. This is "what NFL television is supposed to look like -- not lazy, wide-angle, static shots covering half the field." Meanwhile, Zurawik writes, "I did not see one in-game promotion for any stinking CBS shows during the entire first quarter" (BALTIMORESUN.com, 11/10).

PELICANS GO MARCHING OUT: In Baton Rouge, Sheldon Mickles notes the Pelicans-Suns game yesterday overlapped the Cowboys-Saints contest and "was not broadcast on radio for the first time in franchise history." Saints games in New Orleans are carried on WWL-AM and simulcast on WWL-FM, "which also carries Pelicans games." The Pelicans again will be "pre-empted Dec. 2 when their game" against the Bulls conflicts with a Saints-Seahawks "MNF" game (Baton Rouge ADVOCATE, 11/11).
