Baltimore Grand Prix Cost City $1.4M In Staffing During Event's Three-Year Run

The Izod IndyCar Series Grand Prix of Baltimore during its three-year run cost the city about $1.4M in "increased staffing, overtime and related expenses," according to Luke Broadwater of the Baltimore SUN. In the event's first year, the city "spent about $917,000 on increased staffing, including $324,000 for transportation workers and $126,000 for paramedics." Under new race management in year two, the "staffing costs dropped to $337,000 -- but the race organizers paid the bill." Baltimore this year "spent $487,000 on staffing during the Labor Day weekend event and will not be reimbursed." A city-commissioned study showed that the race yielded $1.7M in city taxes and $2.1M in state taxes in '11, and $1.3M each for the city and state in '12. No study "has been released for the 2013 race" (Baltimore SUN, 10/26).
