Phoenix Int'l Raceway Plans '14 Events To Celebrate 50th Anniversary

Phoenix Int'l Raceway officials and state leaders yesterday "announced plans to celebrate the track’s 50th anniversary in 2014 with a series of special events that will begin during the AdvoCare 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race weekend in early November," according to David Madrid of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. Fans will "see the 50th anniversary theme in many ways over the next 13 months, including in philanthropic and community-outreach initiatives." The announcement comes as the track is undergoing a long-term $100M upgrade that "will ensure it lasts another 50 years." PIR President Bryan Sperber said that next year’s anniversary celebration "will include activities at major sporting events" like the PGA Tour's Waste Management Phoenix Open and the Fiesta Bowl. There also will be "special events held in conjunction with the Phoenix Symphony and the Phoenix Art Museum as well as programs for students to encourage them to pursue studies in science, technology, engineering and math." Race fans can "visit a Memory Lane, a three-dimensional, interactive exhibit that will showcase 50 years of racing at PIR" and also will include "photographs, artifacts, memorabilia and classic race cars with ties to the track" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 10/2).
