Detroit-based Compuware has "terminated a $600,000-a-year consulting deal" with Hurricanes Owner and former Compuware CEO PETER KARMANOS JR., "about two weeks after he made critical remarks in public about the company’s management." The deal "began when Karmanos retired" as board Chair on March 31. Karmanos also used "colorful language when referencing Elliott Management, a New York hedge fund that continued to pursue Compuware this summer despite a failed takeover bid last winter" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 10/1).

THE ULTIMATE GIFT: NBA Kings VP/Ticket Sales & Services PHIL HORN "will be giving one of his kidneys to his wife, DANEA HORN." Danea was "born with only one kidney and has managed her chronic kidney disease for a long time." The transplant is set for today at the UC Davis Medical Center, "shortly before the Kings' preseason opener and the couple's 11th wedding anniversary." Phil Horn "will probably be in the hospital for a couple days and Deana for five to seven days." Phil on Feb. 19 is "spearheading a 'Kings Donate Life Night' at a game to raise awareness of the critical need for organ and tissue donors" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 9/29).

ON THE BLACKTOP: Warriors GM BOB MYERS, assistant coach BRIAN SCALABRINE and Assistant GM KIRK LACOB recently played a game against a group of inmates at San Quentin State Prison, who wore "discarded blue practice jerseys" donated by the team. Myers, a member of the '95 UCLA national championship team, finished "with a double-double, exceeding 40 points and 20 rebounds." The visits to the prison "began a few years ago" (MERCURYNEWS.com, 9/30)....The "Battle On The Bluff," a one-on-one game for charity between Grizzlies Owner ROBERT PERA and G TONY ALLEN, "has been postponed." The game was "called off without explanation about three hours before tip-off" on Saturday. A makeup date will be announced (COMMERCIALAPPEAL.com, 9/28).

NAMES: Former NBAer TATE GEORGE has been "convicted on charges" of running a $2M Ponzi scheme that "targeted ex-professional athletes." George was "immediately taken into custody until his sentencing" on Jan. 16, and he "faces as long as 20 years in prison" on each of four counts (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 9/30)....MLB Giants BOD Chair CHARLES JOHNSON has pledged $250M to Yale Univ., the "largest gift" in the school's history. Johnson "already has his name attached to several Yale institutions that he has supported over the years." His latest donations "will go toward the construction of two new residential colleges." Johnson is the Giants' "largest shareholder" (NYTIMES.com, 9/30)....The cast of NBC’s “PARKS AND RECREATION” on Monday visited Lucas Oil Stadium to film an upcoming, Indianapolis-themed episode (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 10/1)....Actor JIM CARREY attended Sunday night’s Patriots-Falcons game (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/1).

IN MEMORY: Former Clemson Univ. AD BILL MCLELLAN died at the age of 81. During his tenure as AD from '71-85, Clemson's football team won the ’81 national championship, and he oversaw the "expansion of Memorial Stadium to more than 80,000 seats" (AP, 10/1).
