In Boston, Beth Healy cites a source as saying that Red Sox Owner JOHN HENRY has "decided to offer to buy The Boston Globe on his own," after NESN "dropped out of the process more than a week ago." Henry "previously submitted a bid" through NESN. Others pursuing a purchase in addition to Henry "include local and West Coast investors" (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/1).

FILM FINANCIALS: The WALL STREET JOURNAL's Erich Schwartzel reported DreamWorks Animation's "TURBO" "grabbed analysts' attention" yesterday due to its "lackluster summer performance." The movie had a production budget of $135M, but has "grossed only" about $60M domestically to date. The company said that the movie "most likely won't recoup the studio's costs in the current quarter, but predicted that a long international release schedule and tie-in [to] consumer products would eventually make it pay off" (WSJ.com, 7/31).

CHARITY STRIPE: Heat G RAY ALLEN yesterday donated a SMART board, 29 desktop computers, new tables and chairs to the Fred D. Wish School through his Ray of Hope foundation (HARTFORD COURANT, 8/1)....Golfer SERGIO GARCIA on Tuesday met with a group of First Tee kids in Akron and "pledged his support to the program through the remainder of the FedExCup season." He will donate $1,000 for each birdie and $2,000 for every eagle he makes through the completion of the Tour Championship (CLEVELAND.com, 7/31)....The Suns yesterday announced that their Suns Charities 88 group raised $125,000 in its inaugural season. The funds will benefit local, non-profit organizations that focus on aiding Arizona children in need (Suns).

NAMES: The National Football Foundation & College HOF yesterday announced that NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL and the league itself have been named the '13 recipients of the NFF Gold Medal (NFF)....Basketball HOFer and former ESPN Radio NBA analyst JACK RAMSAY has a "marrow syndrome, a condition in which his body is not producing enough blood cells." Ramsay said that he "seems to be doing well with a medication he hopes will extend his life for a year or maybe two" (BUFFALO NEWS, 8/1)….N.Y. Post columnist GEORGE WILLIS' latest book, "THE BITE FIGHT," examines the night MIKE TYSON “chomped off a piece” of EVANDER HOLYFIELD’s ear. Willis said that he "spoke for hours and hours on the phone and in person with Tyson." He also had a "three-hour sit down with Holyfield in a Las Vegas hotel room" (NJ.com, 7/25)….Baltimore-based PressBox has released a new collectible magazine honoring former NFLer JONATHAN OGDEN’s election to the Pro Football HOF (PressBox).
