Palm Beach County Officials Weighing Possible Bid For '17 Solheim Cup

Palm Beach County, Fla., officials are "seriously considering a bid" for the '17 Solheim Cup, according to Brian Biggane of the PALM BEACH POST. Palm Beach County Sports Commission Exec Dir George Linley said that his BOD, which includes PGA Tour Honda Classic Exec Dir Ken Kennerly, has "discussed the possibility of bidding on the event on more than one occasion." Their only "real concern is putting together the required financial commitment" of $3-4M. Biggane notes the Solheim Cup, like the Ryder Cup, is are "played every two years at sites alternating between" the U.S. and Europe. The LPGA "expects to award the 2017 matches at this year's event or shortly afterward." This year's matches begin Aug. 13 at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colo. PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens would be a "logical site for the matches after its success with the Honda Classic the past seven years." PGA National also hosted the '83 Ryder Cup. The LPGA, which has its HQs in Daytona Beach, has one "limited-field event in the state" in the season-ending CME Group Titleholders (PALM BEACH POST, 6/1). GOLF WORLD's Tim Rosaforte reports the "sticking point" to bringing the Solheim Cup to Palm Beach Gardens is raising the needed financial commitment. The dates also would "have to be moved into the fall." Kennerly after selling his company, Int'l Golf Partners, to IMG, "has the resources to put a global deal like this together" (GOLF WORLD, 6/10 issue).
