ATP Narrows Search For Drewett Successor To Two Internal Candidates

The ATP Tour has “narrowed its search to two internal candidates in its effort to replace” Exec Chair & President Brad Drewett, according to Douglas Robson of USA TODAY. The contenders are Chief Media Officer, Chief Legal Officer & ATP Americas CEO Mark Young and Commercial Dir & ATP Europe CEO Laurent Delanney. Sources confirmed that Young and Delanney are “the only candidates being considered.” The ATP board has been “looking for a successor” to Drewett since he “disclosed in January that he is suffering" from ALS and would "step down when a replacement was found.” No successor is “likely to be named until the ATP board meets again during Wimbledon, which begins June 24.” Reaching a final decision could “rest with which man players rally behind” (USATODAY.com, 4/11).

COACH'S CORNER: SI.com’s Bruce Jenkins wrote it “would be easy enough for fans to ignore such nonsense” as on-court coaching during WTA events, but it was “instituted partly because of TV: viewers supposedly riveted to the screen as their favorite player talks strategy.” Jenkins: “Here's something the WTA should know: This is awful TV. And it would be even worse if the two actually had a spirited discussion. Nobody needs to hear that, nor should it become part of a match” (SI.com, 4/9).
