Golden Boy Looks To Expand With Application For Promoter's License In Great Britain

Golden Boy will apply for a license to "promote in Great Britain,” as the company “intends to stage four big shows in Britain each year and hopes to sign three members” of the British Olympic team from the London Games, according to Ron Lewis of the LONDON TIMES. Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said, “We want to sign up some of those fighters who represented Britain at the Olympics.” He added, “The idea will be to showcase them here in the US as well and we would put on four fights a year in the UK with them and four in the US. We would hope to stage our first show in the UK in the second quarter of 2013.” Schaefer attended the London Games and believes that the Great Britain team “was packed with star talent.” Anthony Joshua, who “won the super-heavyweight gold medal, is one of the hottest properties in world boxing, while Luke Campbell, who won gold at bantamweight, and Anthony Ogogo, who won a bronze medal at middleweight, are believed to have been approached by Golden Boy” (LONDON TIMES, 12/18).

ROAD TO RECOVERY: YAHOO SPORTS' Kevin Iole profiled Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya, who now has "19 months of sobriety" in his battle with alcoholism. Iole wrote, "A little more than a year after he admitted that he contemplated suicide to ease the pain he felt, De La Hoya could finally say he was happy to be alive." Now, De La Hoya has "immersed himself in holiday activities and said he suspected that he got far more from them than those he helped." He "gave away free tickets to a boxing card at the Los Angeles Sports Arena" and "spearheaded a toy drive that included other boxers." De La Hoya said, "I want to make this a tradition. It feels so good. This is what I should have been feeling all these years."
