The NHL is "leaning towards canceling" the Winter Classic Friday, however, Day 47 of the lockout passed Thursday with NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly and NHLPA Special Counsel Steve Fehr "continuing their renewed dialogue," according to Rob Rossi of the PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW. Neither the NHL nor the NHLPA provided details of the discussions. But Daly "described talks Wednesday as 'substantive' and union officials expressed guarded optimism about a possible return to the negotiation table." A "shrewd negotiation" of the $3M contract with the Univ. of Michigan will "limit the NHL’s financial responsibility if the Winter Classic is canceled Friday."
