Peter Jacobsen Puts Oregon Golf Tournament On Hiatus For '13; Will Explore Other Options

Golfer and event organizer Peter Jacobsen has "decided to put the Umpqua Bank Challenge on hiatus for 2013 as he tries to decide if a specialized, exhibition professional men’s golf event still has a place in the current sports scene," according to Mike Tokito of the Portland OREGONIAN. Jacobsen said that he will "consider various options for 2014, but after struggling to lure sponsors and fans in 2011 and 2012, he is unsure what form an event would take." Jacobsen: "We didn’t have as big a turnout as we sought, and our corporate sales were disappointing. I’m going to re-evaluate the event, and take a year off [to] see what event, if any, we should have in ’14." Peter Jacobsen Sports has "run a men’s golf event in Oregon every year" since '86, and the event is "made up mostly of PGA Tour players." Jacobsen said that the "logistical and economic hurdles made luring PGA Tour players in August very challenging." Jacobsen: "It’s difficult with the FedExCup playoffs, especially in August. We chartered a plane to bring them in from New York to Portland, and then back to Boston again. The logistics are tough." He added, "The bottom line is, people say they want to see PGA Tour players in Portland, but there are only five, six or seven names that people want to see" (Portland OREGONIAN, 10/16).
