Univ. Of Nevada AD Cary Groth Announces Retirement After Nearly Eight Years

Univ. of Nevada AD Cary Groth has announced her retirement. She will remain in the position through the coming academic year as the school conducts a national search for her replacement. Prior to joining Nevada in March ‘04, Groth spent more than 20 years at her alma mater, Northern Illinois Univ., including 10 years as AD from '94-'04 (Nevada). Groth said, “This is a big weight off my shoulders. I’ve been thinking about it a long time.” In Reno, Chris Murray noted after “contemplating retirement for the better part of 18 months, the 56-year-old Groth officially notified school President Marc Johnson last week that she was retiring in July 2013.” She said that it was “simply the right time to retire.” Murray noted Groth leaves Nevada “in a pretty good spot, free from the crumbling WAC, with a balanced budget for the first time in three fiscal years and with thriving football and men’s basketball programs.” Groth: “It’s a good time, and I’ve got some other interests. I love Nevada athletics. I love being the athletic director, but it’s time for somebody else to sit in this chair” (RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL, 8/30).
