Organizers of N.Y.'s Ironman triathlon “have suspended the registration process for next year's 140-mile swim-bike-run race, highlighting the underwhelming number of athletes that initially signed up for the competition,” according to Chris Herring of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. Spots sold out “in 11 minutes for this year's race even though it was the country's costliest Ironman, at $895.” The $1,200 price tag for next year -- which “wasn't announced ahead of the registration -- appeared to play a part in the suspension.” Korff Enterpises President John Korff, whose company stages the race, said, "It's a fabulous event, but it can't be staged if people aren't comfortable with the entry price." World Triathlon Corp. VP/North American Operations Shane Facteau said that a decision to continue the race “would likely be made within six weeks” (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 8/15). Facteau said that the company would “give refunds to registrants for the 2013 race,” but would “hold their spots should the event go off.” Standard registration fees for Ironman races in the U.S. “range from $500 to $700” (N.Y.
