If the accusations against the Rosenhauses prove true, the brothers “could be subject to NFLPA disciplinary action, including suspensions.” Martoe's attorney DAVID CORNWELL “accuses the Rosenhaus brothers and their attorney, brother-in-law ADAM SWICKLE, of offering inducements to multiple third parties to ‘obtain a false accusation’ against Martoe in an attempt to damage his position in the dispute” (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 8/6).
CHARITY STRIPE: In Boston, Bella English notes Fenway Sports Group upon purchasing the Red Sox in '02, signed a contract with Massachusetts Attorney General TOM REILLY, promising “to raise $20 million for area charities over 10 years.” A Red Sox Foundation report released yesterday revealed that it has “donated more than twice that amount -- a total of $52 million to charitable programs in the past decade -- making the Red Sox by far the most charitable" MLB team. Sports Philanthropy Project Exec Dir GREG JOHNSON said, “It’s not just using cash but leveraging the vast amount of assets -- the ticket donations, ball park signage, corporate sponsors, the players, the professional staff -- in tackling problems.” By comparison, the New York Yankees Foundation -- which “had the second-highest charitable donations in the MLB -- gave $3.6 million in 2010” (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/7).
WIELDING HIS POWER: In Philadelphia, Jeff Blumenthal profiles Penn law professor STEPHEN BURBANK, who is “not much of a football fan.” But he is “arguably one of the most powerful figures” in the NFL. Burbank in '02 was appointed by a federal court judge to “serve as special master of the NFL.” Burbank said that he “could go months without hearing a case but when they come he must move quickly” (PHILADELPHIA BUSINESS JOURNAL, 8/3 issue).
