ISC Taking Steps To Revive, Expand Plans For Entertainment Complex In Daytona

Int'l Speedway Corp. is "taking early steps to revive and expand its former Daytona Live! project, seeking city approval to nearly double the space for a planned entertainment complex" across from Daytona Int'l Speedway, according to Tom Knox of the Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL. What will "be built -- and when -- is still up in the air." But ISC paperwork filed with the city "lists a 660-room hotel, a 2,500-seat theatre and 1,350 multi-family residential units as possible uses for the land." The additional acreage "would give the project 180 acres of land to potentially develop, although Speedway officials caution that any project will move in phases and likely involve only a fraction of the acreage requested." ISC already "owned the land but applied to the city's planning department last week to rezone it from industrial to amusement to align it with the former Daytona Live! property to the south." Daytona Live! was "expected to be a massive entertainment, retail, dining and office complex across the street from the Speedway until the recession hit." Cordish Cos. originally partnered with ISC on the expected $437M project, but the two companies parted ways after the Int'l Motorsports Center office building was constructed. The IMC -- an eight-story building that would become the HQ for NASCAR, ISC and the Grand-Am Series -- “would anchor the office area of the grounds" under the new plan. DIS Senior Dir of PR Lenny Santiago said that the project "will no longer be called Daytona Live!" He added a new name is "far down the line." He said that it is "difficult to give a time frame for when dirt could be moved, noting that the paperwork for a zoning change filed last week is an early step" (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 6/8).
