In West Palm Beach, Jorge Milian notes during memorial services Thursday for former Univ. of Miami AD PAUL DEE, who passed away last Saturday, many "spoke of his compassion." Among the "sizable turnout of mourners" were former UM coaches HOWARD SCHNELLENBERGER, BUTCH DAVIS and RANDY SHANNON, former players BERNIE KOSAR and STEVE WALSH, FIU AD PETE GARCIA and former UM President EDWARD FOOTE. Dee was the "longest-serving athletic director in UM's history." Schnellenberger said, "He carried this program through a wonderful time, the greatest dynasty enjoyed by any college in my memory. ... He was the catalyst, he was the glue and he deserves the credit" (PALM BEACH POST, 5/18).

ON THE PAYROLL: In Raleigh, Luke DeCock notes Duke Univ. men's basketball coach MIKE KRZYZEWSKI received a 54% raise "from about $4.7 million in 2009 to more than $7.2 million" in '10. Krzyzewski's compensation was "2.5 times" Duke's next highest-paid employee, Duke Univ. Health System CEO VICTOR DZAU (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 5/18)....USC tax records indicate that football coach LANE KIFFIN earned about $2.4M in compensation in '10, while basketball Coach KEVIN O'NEILL earned $1.7M and assistant football coach MONTE KIFFIN $1.5M (L.A. TIMES, 5/18). 

NAMES: Basketball HOFer KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR was honored Thursday at the Ford Freedom Awards at the Charles H. Wright museum of African-American history in Detroit (DETROIT NEWS, 5/18)....The N.Y. OBSERVER named its 100 Most Powerful People In N.Y. Real Estate. The list included Dolphins Owner STEPHEN ROSS (No. 7) and MLS Union investor JAY SUGARMAN (No. 64) (N.Y. OBSERVER, 5/14 issue)....The family of the late CLARA ALMAZO is suing the Mets for "over-serving" BRIAN MCGURK, the driver suspected of killing Almazo after "drinking all day, first at the Mets' home opener at Citi Field and then at his local bar." The family is also suing the owner of the bar, McGurk and Aramark, which handles food and alcohol sales at Citi Field (CBSLOCAL.com, 5/13)....Golden Boy Promotions has signed boxers JOHAN PEREZ and JULIAN RAMIREZ to multiyear agreements (Golden Boy).... Under Armour Thursday announced that it “will fund the construction of a new football field” for Dunbar High School in Baltimore City, Md.
