Mark Cohon Staying On As CFL Commissioner With Three-Year Extension

The CFL last week announced that Commissioner Mark Cohon has signed on to serve for at least another three years. Cohon became the 12th CFL Commissioner in ‘07 and since taking the post, the league has seen TV ratings rise in an exclusive deal with TSN and corporate partnerships have hit record levels (CFL). The GLOBE & MAIL’s Allan Maki noted under Cohon’s leadership, the league has “secured a measure of stability along with a long-term collective agreement with its players that includes a hard salary cap and drug testing.” Cohon has also “pushed for holding regular-season games in the Maritimes and for a franchise return in Ottawa” (THEGLOBEANDMAIL.com, 2/9). In Edmonton, John Mackinnon wrote Cohon’s performance record “is impressive, to say the least.” He “successfully put the Canadian college draft on TV and the Internet and launched Touchdown Atlantic.” More than anything, Cohon “understands the league is not merely selling a unique brand of football, it’s selling genuine Canadiana, telling stories, creating memorable moments” (EDMONTON JOURNAL, 2/10). The NATIONAL POST’s Matthew Scianitti wrote with the news of his extension, “rumours also emerged he will leave the CFL after 2015.” Cohon “insists there are more important things to worry about” (NATIONAL POST, 2/11).
