UConn Hires Buffalo AD Warde Manuel To Replace Jeff Hathaway

Manuel is set to sign a five-year contract
Warde Manuel has been named the new AD at the Univ. of Connecticut after serving as Univ. at Buffalo AD for the past six years. Manuel made SportsBusiness Journal's '08 list of Forty Under 40 honorees (UConn). In Hartford, Desmond Conner notes Manuel becomes “the first African-American to hold the post at UConn.” He is set to sign a “five-year contract worth $450,000 per year, with the option for a two-year extension at the discretion of the university.” Manuel will also “be eligible for a $100,000 performance incentive annually if certain academic and athletic goals are achieved and will be eligible for $100,000 in deferred compensation to be awarded at the conclusion of his contract.” He replaces Jeff Hathaway, who “retired with a buyout in August -- some say he was forced out -- after being under fire for myriad issues” (HARTFORD COURANT, 2/13). Also in Hartford, Paul Doyle writes after Manuel joined Buffalo in ’05, the school was “being praised as an athletic department on the rise.” The academic standards “were rising, fundraising and other revenues were increasing, the teams were winning and there was renewed sense of pride around campus.” The credit fell “directly on the broad shoulders of the athletic director” (HARTFORD COURANT, 2/13). Univ. at Buffalo President Satish Tripathi today will announce “the school's intention to initiate a national search for a replacement” (BUFFALO NEWS, 2/13).
