AHL Attendance Up 7.1% Through Jan. 19; IceCaps Finding Success In Newfoundland
The AHL, considered the triple-A level of North American hockey, is seeing its teams average 5,189 fans per game through Jan. 19, up 7.1% from the same period a year ago. The Hershey Bears continue to top all teams with 9,440 fans per game, up 2.2% from the same period last year, and over 2,500 more fans per game than the Grand Rapids Griffins, who rank second in the league. The St. John's IceCaps, who are playing their first season in Newfoundland after relocating from Manitoba, are averaging 6,305 fans per game, having sold out each of the team's first 22 home games. The Adirondack Phantoms are seeing the biggest percentage increase thus far this season, up 75.5% in Glens Falls, N.Y. However, the team has recently announced it will be moving to Allentown, Pa., in the near future. The Rochester Americans, who were purchased along with the Sabres by Terry Pegula last year, have also seen attendance rise 50.4% this season. In total, 11 clubs are seeing a double-digit percentage increase. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Connecticut Whale are seeing the sharpest drops this season to date (THE DAILY).
