Former Broncos Owner Edgar Kaiser Dies While On Business Trip In Canada

Former Broncos Owner EDGAR KAISER JR. died Wednesday at the age of 69 while "on a business trip in Toronto," according to Weston Gentry of the DENVER POST. The Canadian financier and philanthropist purchased the Broncos in '81 for an estimated $30M from Denver's Phipps family and "sold his majority share in the team to current Owner PAT BOWLEN" in ’84. Kaiser engaged in a "long-running legal battle with Bowlen after Bowlen offered to sell part of the team" to Pro Football HOFer JOHN ELWAY. Kaiser claimed that he was “entitled to the first right of refusal in such an arrangement.” But an appeals court in '06 ruled that Bowlen “did not have to sell 10 percent of the Broncos to Kaiser, as a lower court had ordered in 2004” (DENVER POST, 1/15).
