This Week's Newsmakers: Newman/Hass Exit A Blow To IndyCar Series

THE DAILY each Friday offers our take on the performances over the past week of people and entities in sports business. Here are this week's newsmakers:

WIN: NBA -- There’s a feeling of energy around the league as it completes a new CBA deal that ends a five-month lockout. The negotiations got ugly, but the two sides ultimately decided mutual compromise trumped a lost season. And while fan apathy reigned supreme during the lockout, early metrics and media buzz seem to indicate the NBA faithful are ready for tip-off.

DRAW: JAGUARS -- The team gets a shot of energy and the promise of a brighter future from new Owner SHAHID KHAN, but there remains plenty of uncertainty over whether that future lies in Jacksonville. Many in the market are fine with the end of the Weaver Era, but for all he may have lacked, Weaver’s commitment to Jacksonville was indisputable.

LOSS: NEWMAN/HAAS RACING -- It’s a sad day when one of the most successful -- and well known -- teams in IndyCar history announces its withdrawal from the Series. Newman/Haas’ financial struggles have been apparent for years, but the fact that the team was once backed by the revered PAUL NEWMAN, a key proponent of the sport, takes the day from bad to worse.
