NHL Rangers Give A Nod To Their Roots With Winter Classic Jersey

The NHL Rangers yesterday unveiled their official jersey for the Jan. 2 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic against the Flyers at Citizens Bank Park. The jersey was designed in conjunction with Reebok and features a retro style that pays tribute to the tradition of the Original 6 franchise. The sweater includes colors from the team's "Heritage Jersey" with a vintage Rangers shield inspired by the original logo for the franchise established in '26 (Rangers). NHL.com's Dave Lozo noted the "logo on the chest of the cream-colored jersey is less square than the current one and more rounded at the bottom." The sleeves "feature a pair of blue stripes surrounding a thicker red stripe." During the unveiling yesterday at Central Park, Rangers LW Brandon Dubinsky described the jersey as "classy," and F Ryan Callahan "also raved about the look." Callahan: "They did a great job" (NHL.com, 11/28). YAHOO SPORTS' Sean Leahy wrote, "It's an interesting look with the modified logo, but the red, white and cream-colored leaves a lot to be desired." Some Winter Classic teams "have used a pretty-straight throwback for the game, while others have gone the altered-throwback look." Leahy: "We would have loved to [watch the Rangers go] simple and sport the threads from the Stanley Cup-era, but of course, they wouldn't sell considering most fans likely have one" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 11/28).
