Goodell Says NFL Is Looking At Adding Games To Its Thursday Night Television Package

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league is “looking at adding maybe additional games as early as next year” to its Thursday night package that currently airs on NFL Network. Goodell, speaking on SI.com’s “NFL Podcast with Peter King” Tuesday, said, “I don’t see it being every Thursday of the season, but I do think we could expand the Thursday series for the year and that’s what we’re contemplating.” Goodell: “We’ve created a franchise on Sunday obviously, we’ve created a franchise on Monday and now we’ve created a franchise on Thursday. I think we like being special. I think we like having a day where you anticipate having football. I think when you have games every night of the week for example; it takes away from that uniqueness. … We look more to creating events. I think events have to be on specific nights and you have to put your weight behind that.” However, he said the NFL is watching out for the “success of college football and high school football.” Goodell: “Friday nights are traditional high school football nights, and we want to respect that. We want to make sure that continues to flourish. Saturday nights is a big night for college football. We think that’s great for the game of football.” He said an expanded package “could be on the NFL Network, but it could expand into a new network or a different package with another partner” (“NFL Podcast with Peter King,” SI.com, 11/22).
