MLB Franchise Notes: Brewers Owner Calls Season "Bittersweet"

Brewers Owner Mark Attanasio said the team’s season was "bittersweet." After losing to the Cardinals in the NLCS, Attanasio said, "My goal has always been to build a long-term winning tradition here. I think we’ve gotten off to a great start, getting to the playoffs two times in the last four years.” He added, "This is a great place to play. I think this is going to help us recruit ballplayers here. We’re not looking at this as our last shot" (WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL, 10/18). Attanasio said, “This is not the last time you’re going to see a Milwaukee Brewers team in the playoffs. We have a lot of great pieces here” (ESPN Radio 540 Milwaukee, 10/17). SI.com’s Jon Heyman wrote while “some folks around baseball envision” Attanasio as a “potential savior of the Los Angeles Dodgers, he seems ingrained in Milwaukee and shows no inclination of wanting to switch teams.” Attanasio has “invested wisely in baseball's smallest market and turned it into one of the country's great baseball towns” (SI.com, 10/17).

SOME EXPLAINING TO DO: In L.A., T.J. Simers writes though he likes Arte Moreno, “he's got some explaining to do, the Angels going in reverse under his leadership the last two seasons.” Simers: “For starters, how about stepping forward and accepting responsibility for his team's being such a letdown? … Here he is, nine years on the job as owner of the Angels, and his teams are known best for falling short of expectations and just shy of signing the best free agent.” Simers adds, “Arte's the problem, his emotions usually getting the best of him when having to deal with greedy agents and players” (L.A. TIMES, 10/18).

HELP YOURSELF: In Boston, Gerry Callahan writes under the header, "John Henry A Bumbling Billionaire. Lots Of Cash, No Class." Some people have said that Red Sox Owner John Henry “helped himself in his first solo radio appearance, which is true only if his goal was to become a laughingstock.” Henry for 10 years of his ownership has “mostly stayed in the background, and now we know why.” When the “quiet man finally spoke up, it wasn’t about setting the record straight or defending the honor of the Red Sox organization.” It was about “looking out for No. 1” (BOSTON HERALD, 10/18).
