Nike Updates North Carolina Hoops Jerseys, Though Fans Are Less Than Pleased

The Univ. of North Carolina’s men's basketball uniforms “are getting an update," as the back of the jersey "will feature an aerographic design incorporating the Old Well, the outline of the state of North Carolina and a basketball," according to Robbi Pickeral of the Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER. The front of the Jordan Brand jerseys “are pretty much the same." The look “should be familiar to ACC fans,” as Duke in ’09 “started wearing Nike’s aerographic design as an alternate road uniform” (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 10/13). YAHOO SPORTS’ Jeff Eisenberg noted the reaction to the jersey redesign “has not been positive among North Carolina fans on Twitter or Tar Heels-themed online forums.” The last time UNC “attempted a major redesign in 1999, the school infamously replaced the ‘North Carolina’ on the front with an interlocking NC logo.” Due to “extreme backlash,” the team switched back the following season (RIVALS.YAHOO.com, 10/12). ESPN.com's Eamonn Brennan noted while schools like Duke, Texas and Michigan State have all worn an aerographic design before, the change "feels slightly more drastic on the UNC uniforms." Brennan: "In a photo, it feels borderline distracting" (ESPN.com, 10/12).
