Predictions Ahead: ESPN Using New Tool That Deepens Link Between TV, Online

ESPN during its NFL analysis segments has started to use an online statistical tool it has developed called "The Predictor," forging a deeper link between what users see on TV and can use themselves online. "The Predictor" is an algorithmic tool that evaluates chosen statistical factors in a game, such as yards allowed, red zone efficiency or third-down conversion rate, and then makes a prediction for the game. On TV, the tool has been turned into a touch-screen segment sponsored by Ford and used by on-air analysts. Online, it has been made available to Insider subscribers. "The Predictor" existed several years ago in a more limited, complicated form, and has since been revived, simplified and given more visual appeal for its current uses. "Certain factors obviously matter more in some games than others, and this is an easy way to measure that. It's also great to see something that was essentially on the scrap heap given a new life," said ESPN Insider Deputy Editor Dan Kaufman. ESPN developed "The Predictor" in collaboration with analytics outfit Team Rankings.
