Suspensions, Lack Of Stars Bring Lagging Sales For Ohio State Jerseys

Sales of Ohio State Univ. football jerseys "have yet to rack up high scores” with several top players "serving suspensions and no breakout stars making headlines," according to a front-page piece by Tim Feran of the COLUMBUS DISPATCH. Columbus-based sports apparel store College Traditions Owner Kelly Dawes said that jersey sales “have been less than half of what is normal for this time of year.” Jason McFarland, the District Manager for a Columbus-area Cardboard Heroes location, added, “Everybody is waiting around for the next big thing. Is it (freshman quarterback) Braxton Miller? But that number, No. 5, isn’t available right now from Nike, so it isn’t one of the options.” College Traditions Manager Brittany White said the top-selling jerseys "are probably No. 7 in men’s and No. 1 in women’s.” However, RB Jordan Hall (No. 7) was suspended for the team's first two games, and Daniel "Boom” Herron (No. 1) is “still suspended because of the football program’s recent scandals.” Dawes said, “We had ordered 500, 600 jerseys with No. 2 (former Buckeyes quarterback Terrelle Pryor’s number) in December. Thank God, Nike didn’t hold us to that and we were able to convert those, some to 7 and some to 1.” Feran reports due to the situation, some fans are "gravitating to jerseys bearing the numbers of past OSU standouts.” College Traditions is out of Chris Spielman's No. 36 and Archie Griffin's No. 45 jerseys, while White said Eddie George's No. 27 "sells well, too." White: "I would say we sell more of those than current players” (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 9/16). Nike's official jerseys do not include the name of current college players (THE DAILY).
