Friends Of Coal To Serve As Signature Sponsor Of Louisville-Kentucky Game

The Kentucky Coal Association's Friends of Coal organization will be the “signature sponsor” of Saturday's Louisville-Kentucky football game, according to Linda Blackford of the LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER. Kentucky Coal Association President Bill Bissett said that Friends of Coal has “paid $85,000 to sponsor three athletic events this year.” He declined to name the other events. The organization will be “represented across Commonwealth Stadium, including billboards and video clips on the video scoreboards.” Bissett said that the Friends of Coal Bowl, played between Marshall and West Virginia, “has been a successful sponsorship that spurred the idea.” Blackford notes all UK athletics sponsorships “are handled by IMG sports marketing” (LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER, 9/15). In Louisville, James Bruggers notes that the sponsorship “threatens to bring environmental politics back to UK sports” just two years after the school accepted $7M from “coal industry representatives for the new Wildcat Coal Lodge for basketball players” (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 9/15).
