WING MAN: In N.Y. Bart Hubbuch profiled Eagles GM HOWIE ROSEMAN, the “youngest person in that job at the tender age of 36.” Eagles President JOE BANNER and coach ANDY REID “call the shots,” but Roseman “has plenty of admirers among his peers, because he is a rarity among NFL executives -- a ‘two-tool’ executive, as skillful in talent evaluation as he is with the intricacies of the sport’s salary cap.” Banner said, “He brings something to the table for us in every aspect. His understanding of the cap is better than any cap person in the league, much less any GM, and he’s a great talent evaluator” (N.Y. POST, 8/21).
COMING TO A THEATRE NEAR YOU: Thunder F KEVIN DURANT is “on the verge of finalizing a deal to star in a major Warner Bros. film.” Sources said that the film, which has “a basketball subplot, has not yet been named, but it’s scheduled to go into production in mid-September.” The movie will mark the “biggest off-the-court venture Durant has undertaken in his four-year pro basketball career,” and will "solidify Durant’s growing status as a superstar" (DAILY OKLAHOMAN, 8/21)....A motion picture based on the life of Baseball HOFer ROBERTO CLEMENTE is “being negotiated with several studios that include 20th Century Fox.” ROBERTO CLEMENTE JR. on Friday confirmed that a deal is “in the works and that Puerto Rican actor AMAURY NOLASCO is expected to star” (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 8/20).
REMEMBER ME? Retired MLBer BARRY BONDS will appear on the reality show “H8R”, which is reported to be picked up by The CW. Comcast SportsNet Bay Area's DAVE BENZ noted the premise of the show has Bonds watching “someone who absolutely hates him go off on video about why they hate him." He then will "have a confrontation with the person to try to convince” the person that “he’s a decent human being.” The show will be his "first public appearance ... since being convicted on the obstruction of justice charge.” Benz: “How he got roped into this and agreed to do it, I don’t know" (“Chronicle Live,” Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, 8/19).
POLITICAL FUNDS: In DC, Tim Craig reports DC Council member JACK EVANS has “paid $135,897 for professional sports tickets over the past decade using money from his constituent services fund, renewing calls for tighter restrictions on the accounts, which are meant to help city residents.” The funds were about 31% of Evans’ “total spending during the period.” Evans “defended the spending,” saying that he “bought season tickets to athletic events for years to help local sports franchises and that he gives away most of the tickets to Ward 2 residents and local schools and charities” (WASHINGTON POST, 8/22).
IN REMEMBRANCE: NBC’s AL MICHAELS during last night's Chargers-Cowboys "SNF" telecast said of MYRA KRAFT, the late wife of Patriots Owner ROBERT KRAFT: “She really made the world a better place. People have no idea, I mean literally, the thousands of lives in this country, and in Israel, and elsewhere, that she touched.” He added she was “in and out of the hospital over the ensuing three or four months” of the NFL labor negotiations. Michaels: “Somehow, Bob was able to still go through all the negotiations and was a huge factor in it as well.” NBC’s CRIS COLINSWORTH said, “You know why, because Myra said, ‘Go do your job.’ She was so unselfish with everything she did, even to the very end” (ESPNBOSTON.com, 8/21).
NAMES: In Maine, J. Hemmerdinger profiled Shamrock Sports & Entertainment President BRIAN CORCORAN in his Bottom Line feature. Corcoran expects the sports marketing company with eight employees to "generate $1 million in revenue" this year. SeaWorld is Shamrock’s “largest client,” and the company has “signed deal with other notable brands, including Professional Bull Riders Inc., and Richard Childress Racing” (Portland PRESS HERALD, 8/21)....Chargers Owner ALEX SPANOS will “introduce the team’s first-ever wine bearing the Chargers’ name.” The “limited-edition Chargers wine will be unveiled during a private tasting event” Aug. 29 in the Draft Room at Chargers Park. The event will be hosted by Chargers reps and Bell Wine Cellars, as well as “celebrated San Diego chefs and restaurateurs” (SIGNONSANDIEGO.com, 8/19)....“FLASH AND BONES" author KATHY REICHS, whose novel is set to be released tomorrow, recently received a tour of Charlotte Motor Speedway by track President MARCUS SMITH. Her novel, featuring “forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, revolves around NASCAR and Charlotte Motor Speedway” (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 8/21)....Raiders Chief Exec AMY TRASK attended Saturday’s Raiders-49ers game alongside 49ers Owner JOHN YORK and his son JED. They seemed to have “cordial conversation,” while sitting in the south end zone (MERCURYNEWS.com, 8/20)....Jets Owner WOODY JOHNSON's daughter DAISY JOHNSON was the photographer for the team's '11 cheerleader swimsuit calendar. A Jets spokesperson said that Daisy "went through the interview process like any other applicant" before being hired (N.Y. POST, 8/22).
