WUSA-CBS sports anchor Brett Haber yesterday said that he is "resigning from the station after seven years" covering DC-area sports, according to Paul Farhi of the WASHINGTON POST. Local TV stations across the U.S. "have been cutting back on the amount of time devoted to sports and changing the nature of the stories they cover as well," and Haber indicated that he "sees something similar ahead" at WUSA. He said, "Sports is just not as relevant (to local newscasts) as it once was. If you asked me will my job exist as currently constituted 10 to 20 years down the line, I would say probably not." Haber, who has been WUSA's Sports Dir since '04, said that he "intends to specialize in live sportscasting and has several prospects, although he did not disclose his immediate plans." WUSA President & GM Allan Horlick said that he "expected Haber to remain on the job for four to eight weeks" (WASHINGTON POST, 8/2).
CAPITAL GAINS: Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic yesterday announced that it has hired veteran hockey writer Chuck Gormley as Capitals Insider, serving as the primary reporter of the NHL team for CSNWashington.com and the network's digital media portfolio. Gormley joins CSN after 23 seasons covering the Flyers and the NHL for the Cherry Hill Courier-Post (CSN Mid-Atlantic).
