In Newark, Rich Chere profiled former NHLer DAVID EMMA, who has "built a career trying to help today's athletes protect their earnings for life after hockey and other sports." Emma "started at Merrill Lynch 10 years ago, but now has his own firm," Florida-based Emma & Associates Wealth Management. He "preferred not to mention the names of any clients," but said that "many are professional athletes, those currently playing or retired." Emma said, "I really wanted to build a business based on everything that was never done for me" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 5/29).

HOLLYWOOD BEAT: Legendary Pictures yesterday announced that it will develop and produce a film based on Baseball HOFer JACKIE ROBINSON. Legendary will collaborate with Robinson's widow, RACHEL, on the project. BRIAN HELGELAND will serve as writer and director and Legendary Chair & CEO THOMAS TULL will serve as producer. Legendary Chief Creative Officer JOHN JASHNI and former Walt Disney Studios Chair DICK COOK will serve as Exec Producers (Legendary). Tull said that it is "too early to tell when the motion picture will be ready" (MLB.com, 6/1)....PITCH.com's David Martin noted MLB.com Royals reporter DICK KAEGEL "would not give up his seat in the press box" while a scene in the upcoming film "MONEYBALL" was "being shot during a game in Oakland last year." ESPN Chicago White Sox reporter DOUG PADILLA Tuesday tweeted that Kaegel "refused to move so they had to put him in the shot" (PITCH.com, 6/1).

RISING STAR: ESPN.com's David Newton wrote Kevin Harvick Inc. co-Owner DELANA HARVICK "has become known by many." Harvick, the wife of NASCAR driver KEVIN HARVICK, is a "shrewd businesswoman," overseeing the marketing, licensing and PR side of KHI, which fields cars in the NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Trucks series. Newton: "She is fast becoming one of the most influential women in NASCAR" (ESPN.com, 6/1).

NAMES: Jets WR BRAYLON EDWARDS last week “made good on a promise he made a few years ago by sending 100 Cleveland-area students to college.” Edwards is giving about $1M to students from the Advance 100 program, established by his foundation when he was playing for the Browns (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 5/29)….The NFL has granted the Dolphins permission to “have their players participate” in the annual FinsWeekend, scheduled for June 9-11, despite the ongoing lockout prohibiting such interaction (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 5/31)….Reps from the Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine Tuesday “briefed an audience of young hockey players and parents on facts, symptoms and treatment options for concussions.” The seminar was part of “Heads Up Pittsburgh,” a partnership between the two organizations (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 6/2)….Texans Owner BOB MCNAIR and his wife, JANICE, have acquired an interest in three two-year-old horses: Fluctuate, Elusive Kate and Smart Strike (THOROUGHBREDTIMES.com, 6/1).
