Fox Ramping Up Coverage For Saturday's Champions League Final

Saturday's Manchester United-FC Barcelona UEFA Champions League final "has the undivided attention on a holiday weekend of the Fox network," according to Jack Bell of the N.Y. TIMES. The game "will be seen across the Fox network’s mothership" like last season's Inter Milan-Bayern Munich match, the "first time the game was carried on a non-cable channel" in the U.S. Fox Soccer Exec VP & GM David Nathanson said, "We are treating this like the event that it is. Last year we had two strong teams in Inter and Bayern, but that can’t compare to this year’s dream matchup. We are expecting significant growth.” Fox will start its coverage Friday night with a preview show on Fox Soccer Channel at 8:00pm ET. The cable net then goes live at 1:00pm on Saturday, "before the festivities shift to the Fox network" at 2:00pm. Part of Fox Soccer's preview show "will be a segment derived from a poll on FSC’s Facebook page that asked fans to vote for their top 10 goals of the Champions League competition." Kickoff is scheduled for 2:45 (NYTIMES.com, 5/26). Nathanson said that ad inventory for Saturday's final "sold out in January." SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's Fred Dreier reports FSC this year saw a 32% increase in Champions League viewership compared to '10. Nathanson said, "When you see the results we’ve had with (Champions League) it shows why we’re picking it up for another five years" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 5/23 issue).
