Chubby Chandler Building An Impressive Stable Of Top Flight Golfers For ISM

Int'l Sports Management Founder & Managing Dir CHUBBY CHANDLER, who reps golfers including LEE WESTWOOD, ERNIE ELS, RORY MCILROY, JEEV MILKA SINGH and CHRISTINA KIM, is "not using IMG as a model for ISM, and the two companies could not be more different," according to a profile by Michael Bamberger of SI. IMG is a "monolith with hundreds of employees, a vast reach and no face." By contrast, Chandler personally handles "every endorsement deal he negotiates, and he doesn't want it any other way." As for his players, they have "no contract with him." The business side of golf "has become maddeningly bureaucratic and impersonal," but Chandler's "whole manner reminds you that modern tournament golf was made by men who dared to be different." The "one golf person Chandler most brings to mind" is IMG Founder MARK MCCORMACK "as a young man," when he repped ARNOLD PALMER, JACK NICKLAUS and GARY PLAYER. Like McCormack, Chandler "has formed deeply personal attachments with his players." Three quarters of the ISM golfers "have been with Chandler since they turned pro," and he "manages golfers' families too." Chandler also repped U.S. Open-winner GRAEME MCDOWELL "as late as 2007." But Chandler refers to him as the "one who got away." Chandler: "We weren't giving him the attention he needed. I learned something there" (SI GOLF+, 4/4 issue).
