Editorial Finds Majestic Realty's NFL Stadium Plan Bests AEG's Downtown Proposal

A San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group editorial declared Majestic Realty's City of Industry NFL stadium proposal "a superior choice" to AEG's plan for a downtown L.A. events center, based on an analysis of design, site/size, location, landing a team and timing. Majestic Realty's stadium design is “cheaper to build because of an innovative design concept" that will see it “carved into the hills.” In addition, Majestic Realty has “clearance for a 2.7-million-square-foot stadium on 600 acres," compared to "only 15 acres" for AEG. The editorial also contends it "makes more sense to build a stadium within an hour or less driving distance from the people's homes than in downtown L.A. or the Westside.” Each developer still needs a team, because “no team has committed to moving to Southern California.” That “advantage may go to AEG which has L.A. clout on its side," but it is "academic until a team commits." Majestic Reality “clearly ... has the jump” over AEG in regard to timing, as it has an approved Environmental Impact Report and “approval from the Legislature that blocks all other lawsuits.” AEG is “at least a year or two away from clearing these hurdles” (PASADENA STAR-NEWS, 2/10).

NOTHING IS FREE: An L.A. DAILY NEWS editorial, written under the header, “Officials Should Stop Ignoring That Stadium Comes With A Cost," states the “simple truth is that development of any sort comes with a price tag for the municipality in which it sits, whether directly or indirectly.” The editorial: “City leaders need to acknowledge that there are costs to the public” (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 2/10).
