"Fox NFL Sunday"'s decision to do its weekly pregame
show from the USS Harry S. Truman this past weekend "seemed
like a thoughtful gesture that served far more than just the
network's ratings," according to an editorial in today's
CINCINNATI ENQUIRER. It "resulted as a mix of military
documentary, sports commentary, human-interest features and
goofiness that somehow worked. ... It was also a good way of
reminding the nation of the many sacrifices these [military]
men and women make for us all the time." The newspaper
concludes, "A nice touch, well-deserved -- and a proud
moment for network TV" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 12/19).
EXPANSION OPTION? In L.A., T.J. Simers: "The Navy and
your tax money paid half of the expenses absorbed by Fox in
placing its NFL pregame show on the USS Harry S. Truman, an
aircraft carrier taxpayers paid $4.5 billion to build."
Simers: "With all that public money available, I wouldn't be
surprised if the NFL didn't look at the possibility of
laying down grass on the deck of the Truman and awarding an
expansion franchise to the Navy" (L.A. TIMES, 12/19).
