NIKE GETS BUMP ON WALL STREET; NEAR RIOT OVER AIR JORDAN'S

Nike was a "big mover" on the stock exchange yesterday, as the stock was up $2.94, or 6.52%, to close at $48, according to CNBC's Michelle Caruso-Cabrera. Caruso- Cabrera: "The stock's been running up ahead of its earnings report on Tuesday. A lot of analysts put out notes today previewing the quarter, saying they think it looks good despite all this evidence of a slowdown in consumer spending" ("Business Center," CNBC, 12/14). THE BATTLE FOR AIR JORDAN XI: In Oakland, Chorney & Indar report that a "fracas over fancy Nike footwear broke out" at an area mall Wednesday "when a crowd ripped up a security gate and shut down two stores while trying to get a hold of" the new $125 Air Jordan Retro XI. Crowds began lining up at 4:00am for the shoe (OAKLAND TRIBUNE, 12/15). NIKE'S CLUB FORAY? GOLF WORLD's Geoff Russell writes, "Industry types speculating on when Nike might introduce a line of golf clubs have another clue," as sources say that the company has reserved "significantly more booth space" at the '02 PGA Merchandise Show than it will have at the '01 show. The sources add that Nike's '02 booth will be the "largest at the show" (GOLF WORLD, 12/15 issue).
