NEW PLANS FOR FOX SPORTS INTERACTIVE CABLE COME TO LIGHT

Fox Sports Extra and Fox Sports Active are "coming to a
digital set-top box near you" in '01, according to Joe
Schlosser of BROADCASTING & CABLE, who writes that the
interactive services are designed for the "couch-potato
quarterback" to customize their "viewing experience" or to
instantly receive the scores and data they want. Using a
remote control, viewers will be able to "personalize their
on-screen sports ticker," watch replays "at will," choose
their own camera angle, order a pizza, buy movie tickets or
purchase a team jersey. Fox will "deal with cable and DBS
operators to split revenues or cede commercial time in
exchange for carriage" of the services. The services are
not separate networks or channels; they are "digital
attachments that take up a fraction of the bandwidth that
cable operators use." Some of the interactive services
could be coming into digital HHs "within the next several
months," and Fox Sports' coverage of the Daytona 500 "will
likely" be the net's first interactive event (B&C, 11/27).
