NAMES IN THE NEWS

Earlier this month, former MLB P BILL LEE "raised a few
eyebrows" when he said in '73 he and GEORGE W. BUSH "rolled
a couple of doobies and smoked them together." But SI's
"Scorecard" asked Lee about more details from the incident,
and he stated that it "happened in 1972 at a Boston fund-
raiser." Lee: "It looked like one of Bush's kids, and he
was about the right age and he said he had gone to Yale, so
I put two and two together. But, hey, it was pretty smoky.
It was like something you saw through the smoke of a Chinese
opium den. So, I'll take a guess and say it might have been
him" (SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, 12/4 issue)....Pro beach
volleyball player GABRIELLE REECE, on posing nude in an
upcoming issue of Playboy: "I am modest, ... but in some
ways that's absurd because I removed all of my clothing to
do photos for many people to see." Reece, on attempting to
qualify for the LPGA Tour: "I didn't play golf until ten
months ago and in the last ten months I've hit a 170,000
golf balls. I was hitting 1,000 balls a day. I got invited
by some sponsors and a coach to train, with the hopes of
getting my card, which would enable me to play in the LPGA"
("Tonight Show," NBC, 11/28)....In Denver, Gil Rudawsky
writes that skier visits at CO resorts "bounced back" over
the Thanksgiving weekend, in "some cases recording double
the number of people on the slopes" compared to last year.
Visits from Thursday-to-Sunday were up 119% at TELLURIDE SKI
RESORT, up 99% at WINTER PARK and up 70% at INTRAWEST CORP.
resorts, which include COPPER MOUNTAIN (ROCKY MTN NEWS,
     11/29)....Sharks radio play-by-play announcer DAN
RUSANOWSKY, who was injured in a car accident (see THE
DAILY, 11/27) on his way to San Jose Arena last Saturday,
was upgraded to good condition. He is expected to remain at
the hospital for several more days (Sharks).....MN Attorney
General MIKE HATCH said that the state ethics code, which
"forbids state workers from using their jobs to get special
outside benefits," also applies to MN Gov. JESSE VENTURA,
who will be a color commentator for the XFL next season.
But Hatch declined to say whether Ventura's XFL job "is a
conflict of interest and a violation of the code"
     (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 11/29).
