A TAXING SITUATION: SCHULTZ' COMPENSATION RULED AS OK

Arthur Andersen "clarified an earlier position" and
stated that the USOC can pay former Exec Dir Dick Schultz
$587,000 in deferred compensation "without jeopardizing" its
tax-exempt status," (see THE DAILY, 9/25), according to Paul
Foy of the AP. USOC Dir of PR Mike Moran stressed that
Schultz will collect deferred compensation, not a "golden
parachute" or bonus, as the money was set aside from
Schultz's salary that was more than $500,000 per year. In
May, Schultz became the Chair of K.C.-based Marketing
Associates Int'l Sports. Schultz, on "reports of IRS
scrutiny" of the deal: "I don't know how this story got
started. It was just a traditional deferred compensation
plan drawn up ... under IRS guidelines" (AP, 11/28).
