POLL SHOWS N.Y. WANTS OLYMPICS; BUT NOT A WEST SIDE STADIUM

A Quinnipiac (CT) Univ. survey of 1,276 registered
voters in N.Y. conducted from November 13-19 found that "an
overwhelming number of New Yorkers" want the city to host
the 2012 Summer Games, "they just don't want a stadium for
the Olympics built on Manhattan's West Side," according to
Colangelo & Blood of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. The survey showed
that 55% of respondents opposed a West Side stadium for the
Olympics or as a new home for the Jets, while 38% favored
the plan, and 7% were undecided. However, 64% "would
welcome" the Olympics to N.Y. The poll's margin of error is
+/- 2.7%. In response to the poll, stadium supporter/N.Y.
Mayor Rudy Giuliani said, "Very often, people misunderstand
economic development" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 11/28).
